Babydoll is a fairly unknown term for the average South African woman. In South Africa we would more likely refer to them as a sexy nightie or sexy pyjamas. I tested the term on a number of women over the past weeks and most had no clue as to what I was talking about.
Babydolls, in terms of lingerie, is another name for the chemise and is a short sexy nightie that usually comes in a set with matching panties. Strictly speaking a chemise is more tight fitting around the hips whereas a babydoll is usually wider at the hips area.
The word chemise has a french origin and originates from the shirt like undergament that the ladies wore under their outer clothing in the period from the middle ages to the early 20th century. In modern times chemise relates more to a shirt type lingerie or pyjama.
